But I wasn’t thinking about purposeful play and didn’t really understand it. What I discovered during the process of my playroom redo was how much my kids enjoyed some of the toys I had hidden away – I went through everything in one day and my kids were happy to play by themselves with Legos and Magnatiles all day! I ended up going through the toys in the kids’ rooms too and felt an emotional clog lifted once we filled an entire truck bed up with toys to donate. Pickup time is shorter and we are all happier now that the toys are more thoughtful and less over-stimulating.”

With Alanna’s help I have been able to get rid of lots of toys that had little play value but I was hanging on to them ‘just in case’. I kept some of our best toys in inaccessible places because they looked pretty and I worried pieces would go missing, everything is now in reach of the children and the quality and duration of imaginative play occurring now is amazing! As a public school teacher and parent, I’ve always advocated for open-ended problem-solving through Genius Hour and passion projects in the classroom. Alanna’s experience as a public school teacher and parent has allowed her to design a course geared towards parents advocating for purposeful play and self-directed learning. Kids are naturally curious and inquisitive. Alanna’s methods help parents foster that creativity to let their children lead the way!

I love creating learning invitations for my children. However, as we moved from preschool into upper elementary years, I had accumulated too much stuff! Alanna walked through our home classroom (virtually) with me, and helped me figure out the best ways to restructure our space. She gave me both big-concept ideas for storage and organization, as well as discreet ideas to create learning invitations for older kids using real-life household objects. Her tips and ideas motivated me to simplify and streamline. Now I have a soothing room with visual space, with dedicated areas to draw my kids into playful and gentle learning without distraction.
